Style guide and capsule wardrobe for street/urban style people

A style as elusive as yours! Street or urban style is formed on the streets of major cities around the world.

It is constantly evolving, but certain elements of urban or street style have always remained the same.

Like the European-style personality, it’s hard to define, but you recognize the urban style when you see it.

What is urban style?

Urban or street style is often a mix of casual and trendy, and it captures everything that’s going on in the world at all times.

It focuses on subcultures rather than major trends, and also has its roots in sports and musical movements such as skateboarding, hip-hop, and rap. Many big-name designers have always been inspired by urban style.

This style is generally more prevalent among the younger generation, but there are always exceptions, and women over 40 can perform urban style better than their younger peers. Just ask Gwen Stefani!

If you’re not sure what street style is, some examples (both present and past) include punk, goth, grunge, Mod, and hip hop.

How can you tell if you have an urban personality

If you’re someone who doesn’t follow the rules, then you probably have at least some elements of urban style in your wardrobe.

However, most women don’t just like one style. They also pick from other styles. That’s what makes each person’s style unique.

If you’re not sure what your style is, take our fun Style personality quiz to find out.

Here are some ways to tell if you have an urban personality…

You don’t like conformism

While you definitely have your finger on the pulse of trends, your style tends to be subversive rather than conforming to all the trends on the runway.

You don’t compromise on comfort

It’s important for you to dress comfortably. You won’t wear anything that hollows out, squeezes or binds you.

I probably won’t see you in pink

If I opened your closet, I probably wouldn’t see a lot of color, especially rich jewel tones or pinks.

You prefer black, khaki and dark neutrals.

You like to mix and match

Even if you’re attending a formal event, you like to mix formal with casual.

You might wear a khaki jacket over your gown, or opt for pants instead of a skirt.

You wear your heart on your sleeve

Or, at least, on your T-shirt.

While you don’t necessarily like a lot of colors, you do like a good logo, slogan, pattern or print. As long as it makes sense or comes from your favorite band or brand.

A celebrity with an urban fashion personality

Gwen Stefani is arguably the most famous woman over 40, and her urban style is very recognizable.

Fellow singer Pink also loves urban fashion (though she adds more of a rock chick vibe to it).

Amal Clooney (whose style leans toward European style) also often wears city looks like ripped jeans, leather jackets or khaki jumpsuits.

Therefore, you can add elements of this style to your outfit to create a stylish look.

Maybe just wear a pair of sneakers under a dress or add a small top hat to your jeans and blazer, but it will give you more youth.

City T-shirts and tops

Speaking of tops, you like slouchy styles that don’t fit well. You find printed tees and asymmetrical designs attractive, but you can also opt for a one-shoulder style to add some subtle charm to your look.

You’ll usually have a white shirt in your closet, too, because it’s a versatile piece that can be worn with jeans, leggings or rompers, or worn over a dress.

Jackets and coats for urban personalities

Your outerwear will be more cropped jackets than long ones, but that doesn’t mean you can’t pair a long coat with Doc Martens or sneakers.

You’ll love moto, bomber and denim styles and prints that pay homage to the punk era rather than overly classic styles.

You’re also a big fan of baggy sweaters. You prefer oversized knitwear or hoodies, not clothes that are too tight.

City jeans and pants

Jeans are a very important wardrobe staple, and you probably have several pairs of jeans in your closet.

You like vintage jeans and gray jeans, and you like comfy pants. A pair of black skinny jeans or capris will also go well with most items in your closet.

Dresses, jumpsuits, and skirts for urban personalities

While jeans are a staple of your wardrobe, you also like to accessorize your outfits by wearing jumpsuits, dresses, or skirts.

You’re less likely to choose an outfit that’s too “girly.” Or, even if you do choose, you’ll offset it with more casual shoes or accessories (like heavy boots or sneakers).

Pair shoes with city wear

For the urban style individual, there are two timeless classic shoes, one is the Dr. Martens and the other is the Converse high top.

However, you can also try wearing boots or over-the-knee boots with a dress and jeans. Cage sandals give your outfit an edge.

Accessorize with city wear

The most classic street style accessory has to be the top hat.

From jeans to dresses, it can give a relaxed feel.

However, like Gwen Stefani, you can also add some glamour by wearing a pair of sunglasses and a bright red lipstick. Gwen likes to use Revlon’s “Love that Red.”

As for the bag, you prefer a hands-free approach to a tote or crossbody bag, so you can choose a backpack or crossbody bag.
